A major good read

I am currently reading Craig Unger’s The Fall of the House of Bush, and I recommend it highly. And not just to those of us who deem GWB scum.

Unger, who also wrote House of Bush, House of Saud, is a liberal journalist who has had his battles but over-all presents some of the clearest and most valuable background on how the US came to be seduced into the days of Bush. (You can read some excerpts from the book here.)

Probably the first 150 pages of Fall are simply background on the emergence of the neocons in Washington, their calculated marriage to the religious right, and the devious way both groups used each other and events to gain the domination over the country that they sought. As a result of these machinations, the US had Bush2 being led about by Cheyney and various born-agains.

You do not need to share my contempt for Bush to learn from this book. You may not even believe this book. But it is invaluable as a means to remind yourself of alliances and events you knew about but forgot or to learn about those kept secret for so long. If, on the other hand, you fear the imperial presidence and the religious right’s determination to legislate for the country, you need to read this book.

And, no, I am not on anyone’s payroll.
