Puffin’s Place

. . . no-one ever collided with the sky.

It’s noon and it’s dark again.

Remember Arthur Koestler’s 40’s novel, Darkness at Noon? A recovering communist, Koestler looks at Stalin’s purges and the show trials of Moscow in which what today would be called “persons of interest” confess to multiple political sins.

I am reminded of this time and this book when I hear theĀ  morbid confessions of McCain and Obama at the Rick Warren show trials. Bereft of the will or the need to confess to substantive failures, McCain confesses to thefailure of his first marriage. I have yet to hear Obama’s confessions, but I am sure the bathos will reign and the evil of pot will reign.

How interesting is it that this country imitates its two most vaunted enemies: the Communists and the Taliban.
