Anchorage on Palin

September 4th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a “task that is from God.”

. . . .

In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it “God’s will.”

. . . .

Palin told graduating students of the church’s [Wasilla Assembly of God] School of Ministry, “What I need to do is strike a deal with you guys.” As they preached the love of Jesus throughout Alaska, she said, she’d work to implement God’s will from the governor’s office, including creating jobs by building a pipeline to bring North Slope natural gas to North American markets.

In this report in The Anchorage news, Palin’s speech last night and some facets of her brief career in Alaska make for interesting reading.

In yet another story in today’s online edition, the newspaper notes that some of Palin’s stemwinder to the Republican convention stretches the truth:

EARMARKS

PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation, although she has cut, by more than half, the amount the state sought from Washington this year. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

She brought down the house as she smiled sheepishly into the cameras and read from the tele-prompter. It was a mediocre speech at best..but presented very well. Even so I still don’t know who Sarah Palin is!

Hey, Roschelle. Nice blog you have. Re who Palin is: let me help. She is a distorter of fact. She is a banner of library books in her home town as mayor. She is willing to use political power to win in personal fights. She is a toady. She is, I suspect, a conservative who uses her kids as medals rather than people. She is narrow in her interests and absolute in her narrow views. She is no one any of us should want to see anywhere near the White House.

Do you watch Bill Maher on HBO? The show last night was (as it always is) interesting. Bill and Jeffrey Toobin from the New Yorker were talking, and brought up some great questions she should be asked. For example, name one decision she has made as the commander of the Alaska National Guard? McCain said that was over the line! Hmm. I can burn you a DVD if you missed this.

This whole thing is so bizarre to me. It’s like being in a bad dream and not being able to wake up. Palin was virtually unknown outside of Alaska just ONE week ago. A woman, who in her own words “wondered what it is a Vice President does all day”. A woman who wants to deny women the right to terminate a pregnancy even if conception occurs as a result of rape or incest.

Now, she’s more popular than Obama or McCain. What does that say about the mindset of voters in this country. I’ve heard people express how much they love her, her kids, even her parents…who’ve only been shown on TV once at the RNC and have never uttered a word (as far as an interview goes) So what is it about her that has endeared her to so many people.

The scandalous baggage that accompanies her nomination is as lengthy as the Bering Strait…yet she’s almost revered by many woman and some men that have been interviewed since the announcement by McCain that she would be his running mate.

The “maverick” is looking more and more like a sidekick…merely going along with the powers that be…he says and does whatever he thinks his champions want to hear. Just like calling lobbyists ‘birds of prey’ which is a total contradiction to what his true ties with these unnecessary evils in Washington are.

Come on America…are we so shallow that a pretty face is all it takes to win us over? Gov. Palin hasn’t given not ONE interview outlining her plans for this country as VP since McCain picked her….only pre-written rhetoric aimed at tearing down the Democratic nominee and his party.

Appreciate hearing about the show, Beth. i am glad someone who has cout is asking these questions. I’m really frustrated that Obama and crew seem not to be raising this issue. No need to burn a DVD, but thanks. Won’t have time to see it.

Roschelle, again, I appreciate the comment. Want to swap blogroll listings and avoid always linking your comment to your blog?

Sounds to me that she doesn’t support the separation of church and state means.

Republican voters are voting for Sarah Palin, not John McCain.

John McCain, not Sarah Palin, will be the President.

What does that tell us about John McCain and the kind of President that he would make if his supporters feel that his Vice-President is the better choice.

Touche, Robert. Now how do we make the Republicans and dippy females of other persuasions realize this?

You are exactly right, Kenny. Thanks for the comment.
