Who woulda thunk it…the Mormon Church bustles into California to fund the passage of prop. 8, amending the state’s Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Apparently once having heartily accepted multiple wives for every man, the Mormons have retreated in horror that love might occur between members of the same sex AND that these members might have a right to the contractual and social privileges that attach to marriage.

For every Carlotta Valdez, there are thousands of musty old male farts who feel required to direct the lives of others. No surprise there. But that they also feel comfy manipulating the Constitution of a state not their own indicates a smugness striking even for our young elders who stand sweating on the porches of the country every summer, licking their lips at the possibility of a new convert.

Again, the only question in all of this is: how does California’s constitution hurt Utah? Why is some Mormon maverick huddled with US foodstamps in a trailer in NE Colorado screwing alternate wives on alternate evenings any more desirable than the choices made by the rest of us?
